I normally shoot in aperture priority, continuous focus (AF-C) in the Matrix metering mode. Obviously, the focus is more difficult as the distance and action increases. I have a D80 and most of these pics are shot with a low end AF Nikkor 70-300, 1:4-5.6 D during the day.
I get more soft shots than I'd like. I'd also like to blame it on the equipment but I know that's not the cause.
These were shot this past weekend with the sun high overhead.

Hey there GSH, I don't think your off track here. You did a nice job capturing some action. I know it can be hard at times and seem like your just not getting anywhere, but hang in there and it will come.
I don't really know too much about Nikon but will give you advice to think about. It sounds like your using the right settings but I think the main problem your having is with your lens. When you use the low-end len's you will find that the lens is slow to focus, especialy when the action is fast pace. This may be something that you'll have to deal with unitl you can pick yourself up a nice 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens.
Another technique you might want to try to add some impact and excitement to your shots is to kneel when shooting. With kids this age we as adults tend to stand high above them, so by kneeling you get a better perspective for the action.
I hope to write a post on how to shoot soccer on my blog soon.
So just keep shooting and have fun.
